What do I do if I get a fatal initialization error when using Web Start?

The Web Start version of the OT and Archive Download Manager require the JNLP file to be executed with javaws. If your default java client is another application (ex. IcedTea), the file will launch this application and give you the error:

Fatal: Initialization Error: Could not initialize application. The application has not been initialized, for more information execute javaws from the command line.

In order to start the file, you have two options.

1) Change your default browser preferences for JNLP applications to always open with javaws.

2) Launch the javaws viewer from the command line to force the jnlp file to execute with java.

> javaws -viewer

If problems persist, you may wish to proceed using the tarball version of the OT or by using the Download Script to retrieve data from the archive.  If you have additional questions, please submit a Helpdesk ticket to the respective department.
